The Society was set up in 1990 by a few local people who each enjoyed operating Miniature Railways and grew to a dozen or so active members. For many years we have operated a portable seven and a quarter gauge track at many local Fetes and Fairs using a small electric loco to start with
The railway and its trains are operated entirely by its unpaid members and volunteers. As a society we cover all aspects of model engineering and cover a wide range of skills and interests, however our main focus is on our live steam miniature railways and all that its operation and maintenance entails.
Southampton Society of Model Engineers is most visible in its presence beside the River Itchen in Riverside Park, aiming to encourage interest in all aspects of model engineering and similar interests.
